Program Note
Rowdy, playful, and cheeky are just a few words to describe the primary character of this piece! In the first movement, a sneaky but energetic introduction hints at the main motivic material, later contrasted with foreground lines constantly bouncing around between instruments. This rhythmic energy is occasionally interrupted by moments of introspection in the second movement, yet all sorts of groovy rhythms attempt to noodle their way back, propelling the piece forwards. There is a constant shifting of colors and an element of reminiscence, as ideas heard at the beginning of the second movement are brought back in reverse order, and motives from the 1st movement worm their way into the third movement.
