Program Note
I was inspired to write this piece after watching a timelapse of wind turbines spinning against the backdrop of a storm. As dark clouds swept across the sky, the turbines turned at varying speeds—mesmerizing in their shifting cycles of motion. The interplay between wind and electricity became the foundation for this trio, with each movement depicting a distinct stage in this transformation.
I. Storm Clouds portrays the approach of an oncoming storm as distant thunderheads gather. Opening with a soft ascending Shepard tone, low palm clusters are gradually introduced in the piano to mimic the distant rumble of thunder, building toward a climactic arrival of the storm.
II. Wind Winding captures the ceaseless winding rotation of wind turbines. Cyclic patterns drive the movement, incorporating aleatoric elements and wind chime-like textures, yet always returning to its initial position—like blades endlessly turning in the breeze.
III. Dancing Sparks evokes the flickering energy of electrical sparks as they intensify. What begins as scattered flashes gradually builds into a full surge of electricity, culminating in a final explosive burst that brings the piece to a dramatic close.
